The Quiet Township Of Hoquiam Recognizes The Past And Its Riverfront

When a town ages, it has to change too, to avoid stalling out, fading away. Often a town has been planted in a place to satisfy some specific cultural or economic need, and if those days pass, the town has to change its game. And the way a town does this is very important, because it says as much about the times we're all living in as about the way a town makes decisions.

A fine example of this evolution is seen in the Washington town of Hoquiam. It was originally a logging town, a history it recalls with an annual event -- Loggers' Playday. And in the fall there is a logging competition and a parade to further remind the people how they got here. While maintaining these traditions is important, sometimes it's necessary to invent something new.

The waterfront is a likely candidate for change. The stretch of river downtown hasn't been much used since the 1980s. But now that there's talk of development in that area, there's also the possibility for it to become a defining part of the local culture. The town's got to have something beyond just logging and lumber, you know.

There's space on the waterfront for hotels and shops, the kind of commerce that makes a town a city -- or at least a bigger town. A good waterfront area has done much for other cities, notably San Antonio and Baltimore. It creates a kind of city center with room for dining and shopping and entertainment. And of course there's a natural feature that serves as built-in scenery, something to sit by while sipping drinks or having a bit of dinner.

The town has a good, and good-natured reason, to revitalize its waterfront. It has a bit of a rivalry with its neighbor and sister city Aberdeen, the larger town to its east. Often bigger cities get more tourism, more tax money, more opportunities, than the smaller neighbor nearby. Kind of like the older sibling who gets the new clothes and leaves the hand-me-downs for the younger kid. If Hoquiam could get organized and turn its downtown into a beautiful and usable waterfront district, it would have a good chance at showing its big brother next door what a real town is like.

That balance between tradition and innovation is an important one. But it's necessary to think about making change to avoid stagnation in a community. And when small towns such as Hoquiam find this opportunity for evolution, they should take a chance or two and grow.

Past Times And Family

The Polson Museum of Hoquiam City is a testament to the zeal and fondness of its people for whatever has legacy and remembrance of the ancestry of the proud town in Washington. It was originally the loving home of the Polson's who lived in the mansion until 1965 when the family transferred to Seattle. In 1976 Mrs. Polson donated her mansion to the City, which converted it to a museum ever since.

The owner or the beautiful mansion was the late Arnold Polson, who got all of the six thousand five hundred square foot property as a very generous wedding gift from his bachelor uncle Robert Polson. The opulent home was erected in 1924 and was only eclipsed in magnificence by Arnold's childhood home that once in the past stood right beside his own house.

When the Polson mansion was donated to the city it took all of thirty three years of hard work and fundraising to complete the refurbishment and reconstruction needed to bring back the wonderful house to its original opulence. To give visitors a sense of how magnificent it was when it was a private home, pictures of circa 1941 scenes depicting each of the mansions rooms with all its stately decor and furnishings are displayed in each of the very same rooms are displayed.

The Polson museum also houses thousand of pictures and documents that record everyday life in the city and Grays Harbor in all different eras and periods. These priceless photographs give visitors a sense of time travel to the vivid past, inadvertently sharing the lives and atmosphere of what was once the city and harbor life with its people seemingly living on in infinite stillness.

The rooms of the mansion house a massive display of history and culture and seventeen rooms are dedicated to showing the varied collections to locals and tourist alike. The stairway gallery and the different rooms all have special and unique themes that make an effort in presenting their past and the Polson's sense of family and community alive and available to those who wish to partake from its memories. The dollhouse of the Polson's daughter's are a great attraction to children as well as the Little Railroad, which is a favorite for young and old alike.

An extensive China ware display can also be seen, as well as Native American artifacts that are exhibited in the Polson's dining room. A circa 1920's kitchen, remodeled is also on display.

Another interesting addition to the Polson museum is the Rail Road Camp building that is being constructed and designed to reflect and mirror the beauty, substance and functional qualities of a hundred year old locomotive shed found a few miles north of the town, Rail Road Camp, to be found in the northeast corner of the Polson Museum property, it stands 80 by 40 feet. The cost of the building is $750,000 and is intended to be the home for the Polson Museums very wide ranging heavy-machinery collection.

Hoquiam and Grays Harbor's railroad history and logging heritage will be well represented in the Railroad Camp in Polson's museum, especially when the 65-ton Tacoma Steam Donkey is well placed on its flatcar with its own speed track. This particular display will focus on the historic trading in lumber and its wide use of the railroad to bring forth progress to the people that call the land where the Polson's Museum call its home.

The City of Hoquiam is synonymous with the word wood and no one can contest that truth. It is one of the most well studied and well documented logging towns that ever existed and even until today the heritage and history of this town and its proud people is etched in wood, hard wood.

If history and faith cannot establish the love and hate affair of the town then nothing else can, cause at the very beginning even the Native Indians had recognized if not foreseen the future of the area where present day Hoquiam stands. The term or name of the city "hungry for wood" is shared with the river were it stands near and is in the Native American Language a name quite appropriate for what the area will soon become with the arrival of the white settlers.

People began slowly to rush in after the 1850's and then after a great rush of timber men and family run operations were establishing themselves all around the Grays Harbor watersheds and inner timber forest. Others were more prepared than some while a few were well financed and led by men who knew how to make a profit. Some of these men, like the owners of the Lumber and Shingle Company Robert and Joseph Lytle quickly and meticulously made their wealth. In just a few years their foresight and strong personalities and deep pockets made them into so called lumber barons, their cedar shingle manufacturing business was the largest in the world and their introduction and ownership of an electric sawmill, the first of its kind in the entire area gave them a definite advantage. Other players went into the fray with the Grays Harbor Lumber Company securing their interest and fueled by unwavering hunger for lumber and wood products for the powerful Northern Pacific Railroad.

The richest of these lumber families was the Polson's. The family owned two sawmills, a shingle mill, two of the grandest mansions in the area one of which still stands as the Polson museum a National Registries Historical Place. The Polson's family also operated 20 logging and construction camps, 100 miles of railroad and a vast array and value of logging equipment, producing 300 million feet of logs yearly. Alex Polson, the family patriarch made the town his home during 1882. Their business concerns extended from logging to real estate.

The Polson's solidified their control of the Grays Harbor Logging industry when in just 10 years time, the Lytle's out of necessity or the smell of more profits and greatness merged with Alex Polson's interest and in the same manner another big company the Merill and Ring Corporation was also taken into the fold, resulting in the powerful industrial giant that it was at that time and era the Polson Logging Company.

The lumber barons had it all, but the richness of the lands of Grays Harbor was so vast that there was room for everybody to try and make a profit. More than 300 other small logging and milling operations dotted the Grays harbor landscape and even hundreds more of different trade and service type concerns were establish to support the thousands of men who needed anything and everything under the sun.

There is so much literature and existing documents that record and preserve the truth about the logging and lumber past. Anyone can enjoy the wealth of information not only about the interesting lives of the lumber barons with all their wealth and power, but also, fortunately for us, we can also take a peek into the lives of the countless lumberjacks and mill men who truly had lumber in their blood. A proud heritage it is for the town of Hoquiam.

It contains more than 2000 species of plants, 450 species of birds, and 80 species of mammals.

Parts of the forest are composed of semi-lateritic soil that is relatively infertile and Mesozoic Basalt rocks. The climate is humid and sub tropical and the annual rainfall is 1,700 mm. The summer temperatures average 25 degrees centigrade while the winters experience an average of 15 degrees centigrade.

One of the greatest attractions at the park is a tour of the falls. In fact, people generally associate Parque Nacional do Iguau with the Iguau Falls. The waterfalls resulted from a major geological fault that developed several thousands of years ago.

The Iguau Falls form part of the Iguazu River, dividing the river into its lower and higher parts. It is at the border of the Misiones Province in Argentina and Paran State in Brazil. The name is derived from Tupi or Guarani words that loosely translate to "big water." It is made up of 275 falls within a stretch of 2.7 kilometers. Many of the falls are about 64 meters high although a few go to more than 80 meters. The grandest of them all is "The Devil's Throat,"which forms a U-shape that is 700 meters long and 150 meters wide, dropping to a depth of 82 meters. It is at the border of Argentina and Brazil, two thirds of it being in Argentina. Some sections of the falls do not have water. The sections that have water give a powerful display of the strength of water. The deafening thunderous roar is amazing.

The waterfalls are beautiful from every angle. Visitors will enjoy the catwalks and circuits that enable people to explore the area with the greatest biological biodiversity in Argentina.

Apart from the waterfalls themselves, there is also native forest to explore. You will get the opportunity to see some rare plants and animals. Among the animals and birds you will see here include: capybara, coati, puma, tapir, paca, jaguar, deer, toucans, macaws, purple-breasted parrot, and hummingbirds.

The most appropriate way of exploring Parque Nacional do Iguau is on foot. The roads are also ideal for biking.
