How To Choose The Right Color For Your Walls

By Nathan Wolpind

The time has come to splash on some color onto a room in your home. Selecting the design colors to be used can get a little tricky, especially if there are several people sharing the space. To be sure that you choose a color that can appease everyone, it would be best to involve them in the selection process. This will give them a chance to voice out their preferences and see if the different colors can work together, or if you will have to make some compromises. The walls are an important aspect of a room and so colors must be chosen carefully.

If the suggested colors are complimentary, you can consider using all of them. One way would be to use the bolder color for moldings and the milder color for the walls. You can also paint striped walls or have the ceiling in a separate shade. To make sure that the paint colors do not create an unsightly contrast, use paint chips.

Consider the other fixtures or furniture in the room and see if they blend or create an accent. You may want to use hues that bring life to certain pieces or create harmony in the room. Paint colors can be based on a carpet or sofa, or even art that hangs on the wall. If you want to add some texture, you can opt for wall paint finishes such as matte, eggshell finish, flat enamel, a satin finish, glossy or semi-gloss. There are also paints that can make stains come off easily and this would be ideal for those with little ones who use walls as their canvas.

The size of a room can be affected by the colors used on its walls. Light colors make a room look brighter and bigger. Darker colors can give the impression of a small room. Darker ceilings make it look low while lighter colored ceilings give a sense of height.

If you want to stick to the simple and safe white wall, it is believed that the warmer shade of white, the better. A pale beige tint allows more light into a room and compliments most skin tones.

The choice of color can also affect the mood of a room as well as the members of your family. There are colors that bring a feeling of calm and in contrast, there are those that can make one irritable. Much thought must be put not only into the colors of the walls but what the room is used for as well. You would not want to use warm and glaring colors for a bedroom.

Deciding on wall colors to use can be an exciting time for both you and your family. If you will be doing the painting, you can do it as a family activity which can be fun as well as a great time for bonding.
