How To Stop Overeating During The Holidays

By Patsy Koonz

The holidays are delightful in so many ways, but sometimes they can also be the beginning of an overeating binge that leaves you exhausted, lethargic and guilt-ridden when the New Year rolls around. Trying one of the starvation diet plans is what you're most likely to do to lose some unwanted pounds.

By the time February comes, your body aches with feelings of deprivation and you're burned out on the diet. Because you're likely to binge on the foods you love when you come in contact with them again, you'll once more gain pounds.

It doesn't have to be this way - overeating during the holidays, starving yourself to lose the pounds after the New Year, and then bingeing to satisfy the cravings that come from depriving yourself. So, what to do when you're invited to holiday parties, dinners and celebrations? To avoid overeating during the holidays, here are a few pointers you can follow.

Eat before the celebration. In order to pig out at the party, most of us starve ourselves all day. To avoid overeating, try eating during the day. Better if you have 5-6 small meals a day and eat foods that would satisfy your hunger like fruits and veggies.

It's important to exercise regularly. It's easy to skip exercise when your life is a whirlwind of activity around the holiday season.

With exercise, the extra calories you've consumed will be evened out.

Alcohol consumption should be limited. To keep everyone from giving you an alcoholic beverage, carry a glass of sparkling water and a twist of lime. After a glass of bubbly, it's better that you quit.

Ward off depression. During the holidays, people usually think about the good and bad things that happened in the past so they end up feeling depressed. Bringing on depression as an overeating binges is drinking too much alcohol.

Share your food gifts. From your friends and family, you may have received chocolates, wine, and other goodies. Share these gifts if you can. Monitor how much you eat and when to stop, but you can save some for yourself.

Plan activities that you'll all enjoy rather than continuously eat during the holidays. You and your family can play games and have some low calorie popcorn for a snack. Before or after holiday meals, take the gang on a brisk walk. This may become a tradition you want to keep.
