Things To Do In Gordons Bay

By Johannes Stiefel

Widely regarded as one of the Helderberg Region of Cape Town most popular destinations, Gordon's Bay was named after Captain James Gordon - a Dutch Easy India Company captain who explored the region in 1778. Largely regarded as the Monte Carlo of South Africa -- with it's restaurants, bars and nightclubs on the beach road and Mediterranean climate.

Gordon's Bay is home to a number of sheltered beaches that seem to stretch on for miles -- offering ideal swimming and sunbathing conditions. During the summer months, Bikini Beach usually attracts a massive crowd and this famous destination can become quite crowded. Bikini Beach is one of few blue flag beaches in Cape Town and is therefore rigorously tested to ensure that the location maintains a certain level of cleanliness both in terms of the sand and water.

Gordon's Bay offers visitors the district the opportunity to overlook the setting of the South African sun from the comfort of a conveniently located restaurants, bars and nightclubs lining the beach road of Gordon's Bay. Guests to the region will find a handful of restaurants on the waters edge -- overlooking the beauty of Gordon's Bay and offering a limited menu of fresh seafood.

A large number of nearby activities have been attracted to the area due to Gordon's Bay appeal as a tourist destination and it's breathtaking beauty. Active guests will have the opportunity to dust off the old hiking boots and hit the trail to explore the Helderberg Nature Reserve. Walking up to the Steenbras Dam -- the main provider of Cape Town's drinking water -- and overlooking the entire False Bay is a memorable experience. Fun in the sun awaits at the Blue Rock Cable Waterski resort -- where guests can enjoy a day waterskiing, without a boat. For guests looking for that relaxing day on the fairways -- Gordon's Bay is surrounded by a large number of world class golf courses.

Gordon's Bay is home to a relatively elite group of residents and the palatial accommodation clinging to the steep Helderberg mountain range bears testament to this. Numerous Gordon's Bay guest houses offer luxury accommodation with a view of Gordon's Bay laid out beneath it. Most of the accommodation in Gordon's Bay is conveniently located and most of them offer conference venues in Gordon's Bay just to round off the appeal.

Gordon's Bay was originally known as Fish Hoek - evidence of which can be found on the board outside the local post office. However, Gordon's Bay has come a long way since the name change and has gone from strength to strength. Gordon's Bay is already regarded as the most popular destination in the Helderberg region and looks set to overtake its larger, more famous neighbors with a couple of activities to spare.
