I bet you had that sometimes too, that you just decide it is now time for a getaway. Just "What the heck" and take a short break. I bet you had that sometimes. You are just fed up and want to break out and you just want to feel the wind through your hair and just drive your motorbike. So, I got on my motorbike (a beautiful Harley Davidson) after I packed all my stuff in literally half an hour and then I still didn't even know where my bike would take me. But my Harley was ready to take me anywhere.
I always wanted to visit the Boot (Italy) and the land of the ancient gods (Greece), so I decided my bike would take me there. And thus, I headed for the Italian border. Driving through the mountains and environment of Switzerland was great and my old Harley just sounded right when we climbed the Swiss mountains time and time again. Yes, no matter its age, you can always count on the Harley technology to take you anywhere. Harley owners know they can rely on their machine at any time. And thus, my machine took me to the Italian border close to Lake Como.
Italy was different though. Italians go crazy as soon as they get in a car and you really have to be careful when you drive a bike on the Italian motorways. Some of those Italian drivers tend to go crazy as soon as they get into their cars. Needless to say, when we drove from the north of Italy to Rome, we had some interesting experiences. Especially when you had paid for the toll roads and had to get from 20 lanes into 3... Boy! But then again, I must say that when you drive a machine like a Harley Davidson through the Italian landscape, you also get a lot of attention from the Italians, who love to see a great motorbike like my old Harley.
After driving through Rome for a little while (and visited some historic places), we decided to drive to Ancona and take the ferry to Greece. When we arrived in Greece we decided to head for Athens (a must see) but when we arrived there (and visited the Acropolis) we decided it was too humid and too hot to stay there too long. So we visited the harbor of Piraeus (which is really close) and took the ferry to the island of Crete (which we both wanted to see already for a long time). When we arrived there, we drove through the countryside and visited historic cities like Chania and Heraklion and also visited the more touristic places like Malia and Chersonissos (where youngsters have a ball with their beers, we can assure you that).
We saw Crete in all its facets and just kept driving all over the island. And yes, it is stunning. And yes, our Harley Davidsons were the talk of the town everywhere we went. We never saw a similar machine when we drove across the island and everywhere we went, people were waving to us. I really have to mention that: the Greek hospitality is amazing and if you ever have the time, you should take a trip to Greece or one of its beautiful islands.
