Top Destinations: Five Great Places to Spend Your Christmas Holidays

By Becky Padmore

If another Christmas at home is all too much to bear, and you long for an alternative to the usual cold turkey and roast potatoes, here are a few seasonal alternatives:

1. Aspen - An attractive snowy playground of the wealthy and beautiful, the mountain resort of Aspen is definitely worth considering for a Christmas break. Take a ski ride to play around on the slopes, drink cocktails in the local bars and dance the night away in a cool nightclub. For Christmas day retire to your luxury ski lodge and enjoy a romantic cuddle by the open fire. A perfect adult Seasonal break!

2. Edinburgh - The beautiful and historic city of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom holds a six week festival of events and activities starting from late November and continuing until early January. Festivities include a fun fair with Scotland's largest ferris wheel, Christmas markets, carol concerts, shows and of course children's pantomimes. Book into a grand hotel and enjoy heather-fed lamb or rabbit & pheasant terrine for Christmas dinner instead of roast turkey. Of course you'll have to stay for the legendary Hogmanay - one of the best new years eve celebrations in the world.

3. Sydney, Australia: Bikini babes and bronzed hunks for Christmas may be the opposite of your usual celebrations, but in Australia in December, it's summertime! Sydney attracts 40,000 visitors from the world over at this time of the year, looking for a real Aussie Christmas - barbecued shrimp, seafood and fresh salads are all helped down with a cool beer on Bondi or Manly beach.

4. New York - New Yorkers love to celebrate Christmas and as expected the famous city pulls out all the stops this time of year. The Christmas trees, the lights, the shows on Broadway and the world-famous shopping are just a few reasons why so many people visit New York during the seasonal holidays. Ride a horse-drawn carriage through Central Park, ice-skate at the Rockefeller center, spend a fortune in Macys and then stop for an eggnog latte in Bloomingdales - a perfect Christmas break.

5. Alaska: Reindeer enthusiasts and snow lovers should check out Christmas breaks in Anchorage, Alaska. The town's big visitor attraction, the Reindeer Farm is well worth a visit, as you can pet and feed the animals, and see moose, elk and blacktail deer. Those of a caring disposition should be warned - Reindeer will most likely be on the menu at whatever restaurant you decide to dine at!
