Drakensberg Mountains - Cleopatras Mountain Farm House Escape

By Rob Atherton

Hidden away in the breathtaking UKlahlamba Drakensberg mountains in the Kamberg Valley near Giant's Castle, you'll find Cleopatras Mountain Farmhouse. This exclusive Gourmet mountain lodge is 200km from Durban international airport and 450km from Johannesburg international airport. I was driving down from Joburg and the journey took me about 5 hrs down the N3 toll road before coming off at Mooi River. From there, it was no more than 30 miles and despite the fact that the directions were good, it is far better to carry out this section of the journey by daylight to make it easier to pick up the landmarks that are referenced in the map.

Finally, I showed up but because it was after sunset, I was not able to truly take pleasure in the beauty of its setting until the following morning. I had also showed up too late for the 6 course dinner which was a shame. You'll find eleven rooms at Cleopatras and every one is different. I checked into room 2, the Scandinavian suite which was fabulous and quite spacious. It had been a tough journey so I soon got into my bed that was warmed by an electric blanket and went to sleep.

I woke up early on as I had a lengthy drive to the Zulu Battlefields ahead of me but first of all I wanted to explore the immediate area. The early morning mist hung about the nearby mountains and I could see exactly what a picturesque spot it was. I went to the breakfast area where a splendid three course meal was dished up to set me up well for the busy day ahead. The chef at Cleopatras prepares his meals with flavour as his main objective and I had to say that I was not disappointed. Actually, I don't remember the last time I was dished up such a great breakfast.

Next it was time for a fast journey up to the top of the mountain despite the fact that the view would be restricted. Nonetheless, it was clear enough to see that for those aiming to spend a little time out of doors and enjoy superb food, Cleopatras is highly recommended as a place in the Drakensberg to escape to for a short break. Activities include things like walking in the Highmoor Nature Reserve, horse riding, horse stud visits & local adventures, angling, helicopter rides, Bushman rock art, Crane rehabilitation centre.

If you'd like to go out driving during the day, there are more than 180 visits along the Midlands Meander from wood turners, to potters, to cheesemakers, to weevers and much more.
