Requirements For A Great 4WD Holiday

By Byron Jonas

One can have a huge amount of fun with a 4WD holiday. If you and your loved ones are fond of the outdoors, there are not many things as satisfying as spending a number of days far away from the hectic life of the city in a location where can you breathe clean, fresh air.

The way to get going is of course to buy yourself a 4WD. There's no need to buy a brand new one. In fact, if you plan to take it into the wild often, it's really not a good idea to buy a new 4WD costing more than your house, since it will go through a lot of wear and tear quite quickly.

After that it's a good idea to join a 4WD club. There are no doubt such a club near you. This way you will get to learn the ropes from people with a lot more experience than you. It's also much more interesting to share the outdoors with people who think like you than to go all on your own.

Very often your 4WD trips will be into virgin country, where there will definitely not be a hotel or restaurant anywhere near. That means you have to arm yourself with the right equipment. Get a respectable quality tent that is able to withstand all the weather conditions you are likely to encounter on your trip. Your sleeping gear is also very important: A comfortable sleeping bag and a good quality camping mattress will go a long way to make sure that you have a good night's rest.

Since there won't be any restaurants in the vicinity, you will need to bring along the right equipment to prepare your own meals as well. A gas cylinder, a small gas stove and all the cooking utensils you will need are essential.

The right kind of clothing for the outdoors is also important. Take clothes for all weather types, especially if you will be venturing into the mountains. Weather there can often change without any warning. Tough yet comfortable clothing is a good idea in this regard.

4WD clubs have regular outings where they go on trips of different durations. A a novice, it's probably best to start off with a weekend trip to a location not too far from home. This will give you the opportunity to find out what you have forgotten to buy and to learn the basics of 4WD trips without too much stress.

Not many people will ever be able to experience the outdoors the way you can during a 4WD holiday. You will see places an ordinary motorist never will - places of uncommon beauty. There is one thing that you should always remember on a 4WD trip though: be a responsible driver. A 4WD can cause a lot of damage to sensitive terrain in the wrong hands. Enjoy your time, but try to always leave the area in a better condition than you found it. This way those who visit after you have left will also be able to enjoy it.
