The World Cup is only two days away and the USA is getting ready for their debut against the Three Lions, England. Unfortunately, the USA has several key players (as do many teams) just returning from injury; Oguchi Onyewu and Jozy Altidore. The good news is that both of these players seem extremely optimistic and are feeling fit.
Jozy Altidore turned an ankle less than 2 weeks before the opening day of the World Cup. This was a complete scare. Onyewu ruptured his patellar tendon, which most thought would end his chances of returning in time for the World Cup.
Onyewu, who most know as "Gooch" says he's ready for England. He's stated that he's ready to start and can play for 90 minutes.
He's only had a couple of games to test it out, but he's been involved in all activities during practice. His first game back against Turkey he did seem rusty, but at least he got to shake off the rust (that's what the fans are hoping!).
On Wednesday, June 09, Altidore is back in training. He's also mentioned that he's feeling great and the ankle is fine. However, it was a bit sore after training. Jozy and American fans are hoping that his ankle can hold up for 90 minutes as he's a key player up top.
The USA has had a strong back line over the past few years, but a big part of this was due to Gooch. He hasn't played a full 90 minute match for about 8 months. So even though he thinks he's back to 100%, it will take him some time to get back to full form. Hopefully, he's close enough against England.
Gooch's experience in the back has put him up against some of the best in the World. Now it's time to see if he's ready to match up with Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch. If he can hold his own against England, then he should be fine through the group stage.
American fans can only hope we see the same quality of play they've produced in last summers Confederations Cup. Many want to forget about the last World Cup, but 2002 was a huge success. Anything less than producing those same results, American fans won't be happy!
