Winter Majesty in the Grand Canyon Even without Colorado River Raft Trips

By Stephen Daniels

By the time the snows begin to fall near the Grand Canyon in the colder months, Colorado River rafting outfitters have already stowed away their gear for the season and are enjoying the high-desert winter. But for those adventurers who want to enjoy the area when most other travelers are back at home looking forward to next summer's retreat, there is winter magic in the Grand Canyon even without Colorado River raft trips.

The Grand Canyon is one of the most extreme of American landscapes. During the spring and summer months Grand Canyon rafting is a great way to gain access to parts of the park inaccessible for the average tourist. Most travelers miss out on most of the natural beauty concealed deep in the recesses of the rough terrain. However, wintertime adventurers in the four-corners region have to respect the true distant ruggedness of the panorama. Some parts of the park are closed, but the South and West Rims stay open year round. While the National Park Service cautions against treks down into the gorge, multi-day hikes, mule trips and back-country trekking are still accessible to travelers, and accommodations at local El Tovar Lodge and Hopi House can provide comfortable rooms, warm fireplaces and excellent cooking.

Interested in seeing the area from another perspective? Following the road that carried travelers to the South Rim for hundreds of years, the Grand Canyon Railway departs every day from Williams, Arizona, year round, with a adequate lay-over at the South Rim for you to take a short hike and enjoy the extraordinary view. Or, speaking of views, aerial excursions of the region are also available all through the year. From hundreds of feet over the rocky landscape, the stunning vistas of the four-corners region and the tumbling river below are sure to lure adventure-seekers to make reservations for a spring or summer Colorado River raft trip, where an up close and personal experience with the scenery is possible.

While wintry weather trips to the region can be incredible, after the winter precipitation melt in spring and summer months the landscape is strewn with wildflowers and the river swells to its world-class white water conditions. For your average thrill-seeker, this is the time of year that the local authorities advocate actually getting down to the base of the canyon, where hundreds of thousands of years of geologic history is written and the river rushes by. Among the majority of expeditioners, Grand Canyon rafting is open from April through September, and offers an experience on the water that is unmatched. However, the splendor of the area can be experienced in any season, and off-season cold-weather travels to the four-corners region can feel like the majesty of the vista is all just for you.

There are a few things to think about when planning a winter adventure to northern Arizona and southern Colorado. Pack warm, because while there is usually plenty of sunshine, temperatures can get pretty low and a snowstorm can strike any time. That being the case, be ready for driving delays due to inclement weather, and pack water, some food, and extreme cold weather protection in case you get stranded in the car for a few hours or a few days. Also, while winter is certainly the unhurried time of year at the canyon, the holiday seasons can get pretty hectic, so guests wanting to celebrate during the holidays might want to book reservations as much as a year ahead of time. And remember that while Colorado observes daylight savings time, Arizona does not, which is notable when setting up appointments and reservations with local outfitters and lodging. Although white water rafting the Grand Canyon is a once-in-a-lifetime event, the region has much to offer year-round. Take pleasure in a winter wonderland at one of our national park treasures.

A Remarkably Diverse Cultural Vacation Experience Is Waiting In The City Of Brussels

By Ben Pate

When you think of The City Of Brussels, you probably think of beautiful buildings and beer but did you know that an exceptionally diverse experience awaits you there? Because of its location, it has a wealth of culture and history and being the capital of Belgium, it stands ready to offer you all you could possibly want from a vacation experience but you need a passport to visit. If you go online to USpassportnow, all your passport needs will be met quickly and securely.

The traditional procedure for getting a passport was filled with endless lines and time delays and was quite a frustrating process. With online agencies available from the convenience of your own home computer, you can get a passport expedited or have any other passport need met quickly and securely.

One of the highlights of Europe can be found in The City Of Brussels, Belgium in the form of Grande Place. This is certainly one of the most beautiful town squares you will ever see. The central green space is surrounded by buildings that are over 300 years old and filled with culture and history. During the summer months, the buildings are light during the evening and music in the streets is expected and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

If you are looking for a great shopping opportunity, the Bruparck is just the place for you. It is also considered the entertainment center of the city so, needless to say, there is plenty to see and do here. One of the interesting attractions here is a reconstructed Belgian village which provides a glimpse of how life was in Brussels many years ago. This entertainment center is also home to the largest movie complex in Europe as well as a water park which provides refreshment for vacations and locals during the hot summer months.

Art lovers have many spectacles to enjoy in Brussels but perhaps one of the most famous is the statue Manneken Pis. This is a statue of, shall we say a boy relieving himself after enjoying too much of the local beer. This statue provides variety throughout the year as there are times it is dressed in costumes so you really know exactly what you are going to see. A futuristic theme is completed in the Atomium which is a statue symbolizing a molecule and dedicated to progress. You can enjoy an elevator ride to the top of the sphere of this statue and you will be treated to a breathtaking view of the city. Much more is provided for the art lover in visits to the Musees Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire art museum and the Musees Royaux des Beaux Arts de Belgique. These contain works of art from all over the world.

As previously mentioned, beer is important to citizens of Belgium, so you definitely do not want to leave without sampling a couple different brews for yourself. Visit a brewpub where you can try some famous Belgian brews, like the ones infused with the flavor of fruit. A traditional Belgian dish is frites, or as we call them, French fries. They definitely are a good companion to a tall glass of beer, so be sure to grab some.

The Basics Of Betting On Sports Futures

By Ross Everett

Serious sports bettors often dismiss futures wagers as sucker bets targeted at 'squares' looking for a big payoff. For example, a typical futures 'sucker bet' would be something like betting that Harvard will win the NCAA basketball tournament at 500/1 odds. Sure, the potential payback is huge but here's the problem--the "true odds" of Harvard winning the NCAA hoops tournament are astronomical, and certainly well in excess of 500/1. That means that from the outset this bet represents a poor wagering value.

For the more serious bettor, there's a number of obvious problems with futures wagers. They require that your wagering 'capital' be tied up for months. Furthermore, once you've placed your bet you're at the mercy of injuries, suspensions, trades and the other numerous factors that can spell defeat for a sports team. It's no simple task keeping up with these variables on a day to day basis, and predicting them over a longer term is the province of psychics and not sports handicappers.

So why bet futures at all? More so than anything else, its essential to think of sports wagering not in terms of who wins or loses, but in terms of value. Properly utilized, future book wagers are often a great source of value. Below are some of the ways I like to use future wagers:

Futures can be a good way to leverage value on propositions where your knowledge is greater than the bookmaker's. For example, many sports books offer betting propositions on entertainment oriented events like the Academy Awards. A handicapper who pays close attention to the movie industry and Hollywood news can stay one step ahead of the linesmaker.

Every year some sportsbooks start to take action on the big Academy Awards categories like Best Picture and Best Director well before the actual nominations are released. If you can stay up-to-date on the buzz surrounding certain films you can get substantially better value than if you wait until after the nominations are released.

Making the Academy Awards an even better candidate for futures wagers is the nature of the film business itself. The release schedule for films is set well in advance, and after the year end cut off date no 'surprise' releases can sneak in to consideration. At this point, its relatively easy to narrow down the serious contenders and with some work to come up with a 'short list' of Oscar candidates.

It's also possible to leverage value in the 'stick and ball' sports with future wagers. There are obviously more variables in sports than in the entertainment industry and the top teams are never going to be found 'under the radar'. For example, you can already bet that the Patriots will win the 2010 Superbowl but you'll be hard pressed to find a value price on such a popular team with the general public.

To find value on this sort of wager you need to look for 'dark horse' candidates. For example, at midseason you could have bet on the Carolina Hurricanes to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at prices as high as 25/1 or 30/1. Now, they're one of four teams remaining and are priced at 5/1 to 7/1 depending on the book.

This play wasn't based on any sort of certainty that this team would win the Stanley Cup, but rather on the value they presented. In other words, the true odds of this dark horse Cup win is more in the range of the current price so the 40/1 is a clear overlay. Once the playoffs begin, this sort of positional play offers a lot of options to hedge and to lock in a profit.

"The field" can occasionally offer wagering value as well. A good example was the NASCAR Rookie of the Year futures in 2001. Some books offered a bet on 'the field' at prices as high as 15/1. After Dale Earnhardt's tragic death, his team turned to rookie Kevin Harvick to fill 'The Intimidator's' place in the driver's seat. Someone who followed NASCAR closely knew this was going to happen well before it was publicly announced, and was able to grab a great price on Harvick as part of 'the field'. By midseason, Harvick's success had pushed prices on 'the field' down to the point that it was the favorite everywhere with prices in the range of -250 to -300.

This is obviously a best case example, but there have been similar circumstances that were still good value plays but didn't work out perfectly like the Harvick situation. Several years ago it wasn't uncommon to find a field bet on NASCAR road races that allowed you to bet several of the road course specialists like Ron Fellows, Boris Said and Scott Pruett with one bet. You wont be able to take advantage of the field bet often, but if you keep your eyes open and think out of the box it can be very profitable when it does occur.

As a postscript, I want to emphasize the importance on shopping around any futures play for the best price. Shopping points is a smart thing to do on any wager, but the differences from book to book are frequently most extreme with futures plays. A little legwork can yield a substantially better price and the resulting better value.

Buying Clothes As A Christmas Gift For The Woman In Your Life

By Mark Walters

The thought of buying clothes for your wife or girlfriend this Christmas may fill you with horror, but with so many women loving clothes and fashion this really is a great choice of present for the woman in your life. How to get it right though? Well, your wife or girlfriend will certainly leave a few clues about the kind of things she loves to wear so, with a bit of thought and some planning, finding a fashionable gift this Christmas should not be as hard as it may at first seem. Clothing may not seem like the obvious choice compared to perfume but if you get it right she will certainly appreciate the thought and effort you have put into finding something that suits her tastes and personality.

The first thing that you can do to help you work out what might be a good choice of clothing for your wife or girlfriend is to carefully study and analyze her taste in clothes. Does she love jeans? Does she like to change her look with coats or jackets? Is she more of a dress and skirt type of girl than a jeans and t-shirt girl? Try to work out the things she loves and then build on this theme. Finding an item of clothing that is similar to something she loves and wears a lot could be a good choice, particularly if you can find it in a designer label or a range of clothing that she would normally only consider for special occasions. Avoid choosing something that you like - it's about her - and she may think you are trying to change her if you pick out a girly, feminine dress when she is more at home in skinny jeans and rock band t-shirts.

It's important to try to find out her size as buying her anything way too small or way too large could cause offence. Try sneaking a peek at the labels in her clothes but be aware that some women take different sizes in their skirts and trouser than they do for their top half. Remember to hold on to the receipts so that your wife or girlfriend can exchange the item if it does not fit her.

Avoid lingerie or overtly sexy items unless you are 100% sure your wife or girlfriend will find them fun. Some women may feel that you are indicating that you are not happy with her as she is if you choose sexy clothing or lingerie.

Consider color with care as well for example if she is a redhead avoid oranges, reds and pinks. Browns and tans don't always suit brunettes either so it's important to consider her skin tone. Darker skins and those who opt for the tanned look can generally take stronger colors. Lots of women love black and this can be a safe bet but make sure your wife or girlfriend is one of the women who likes this color.

A Family Camping Vacation Is The Best Vacation To Have

By Greg Scott

Get the family together and tell them you are off on a family camping vacation. Getting away from the WWII, play station 3 and the x-box can be a very positive experience. This is a good experience, showing kids that you can have fun, without all the high tech toys.

Buying camping equipment is easy. Go to a store, get a coffee pot, tent, sleeping bags and a stove. Go to a nearby grocery store and pick up food you will need. Gather up the family and leave all the high tech toys at home.

Kids may complain for a day or two about the hard ground, early sunrise, or dirt, but after a day or two they will forget all about it. This will be a great opportunity to get to know your kids. They will be excited to try new things like hiking, swimming in the lake, or fishing. Having time to talk around the campfire at night and enjoy the smores for dessert will make a special memory.

Before you leave the house put some board games in the car, then you can enjoy a game night while having a camp fire. After the games sing some songs and share some stories, while roasting marshmallows. The family will enjoy the stories a lot more and they will be appreciated.

Maybe you are asking where to go camping. Look on the internet and type in where you live. Most areas have state parks within 50 miles or a campground of some kind.

Some like to camp on beaches and some like to go into the woods. Our country is surrounded by beauty, from the rolling hills and tall mountains to the oceans, lakes and streams. Nature is all around you, we just need to take the time to enjoy it. One can even take the family pet with them.

A fun family idea while you are camping is to go fishing. It is great fun when you catch your first fish. Roasting marshmallows over an open fire, while listening and identifying the night sounds is always fun.

Sounds of nature are all around us and the best way to enjoy them is with the family. Most campgrounds have bathroom and shower facilities so one can wash up. Some even offer running water and electricity.

Going camping with no high tech toys and cell phones is the best part of camping. The things seen will be unforgettable and the kids will keep busy with their made up games. Enjoying the animals flying overhead or scampering on the ground is another special treat of camping.

If you want to teach your children history, take them camping. Spend time with a ranger who can share the history of the area you are visiting. Take time just to be quiet and enjoy the day and night sounds, and try to identify what you hear. It will be amazing all the different animals there are.

Becoming closer as a family cannot be avoided when going camping. This will be a very special time and long remembered. Doing new things is a must when going camping. Sharing times of laughter and mistakes is a great way to get to know each other better.

From this moment on, when you are around the person you plan to give a gift to, keep your eyes and ears open. This simple fact will often give you all you need to be able to ascertain that perfect gift for them. This is especially true if you happen to be in a store with them, and they are surrounded with "stuff" to buy. They will often pick something up and make a comment, such as:

"This is nice, I'll have to keep it in mind".

"If only I could afford this".

"I could use this if it was in yellow".

Remember these comments, and be sure to write them down when you get a free minute. These passing comments open the doors to great gift giving...

b) What does that "special someone" like to do in their spare time? Do they have a particular hobby or pastime that consumes them? If they happen to have a favorite sports team, enjoy crafts, or like to spend their time with some other pursuit, there is often some great little gift that you can get them to help them out with this endeavor. Ah, but what is that gift? Even if you don't know anything about their hobby or pastime, there is somebody out there who does. You just need to do a little research. Why not call up your local hobby shop, or post a question on an internet forum, asking "what would be a great gift for someone who likes to ". People will be more than helpful to help you get that perfect gift for someone who shares the same passion as they do.

c) Friends are a literal goldmine of information on people. You could always ask their closest friends for gift giving suggestions. Before you ask though, it's often a good idea to have some sample gift giving suggestions of your own. Why? If you pose this question to someone you will be putting them on the spot and they could draw a blank. By having some gift ideas of your own you will "jog their memory" a bit. Let's try an example. If you are going to ask your daughter's close friends for some gift suggestions, you could have some pictures that you have cut from an old catalog on potential gift ideas. Why the picture? Well, a picture is worth a thousand words, so it can spur on even more potential gift ideas. Her friends might be reminded of something she said would really like.

These three ideas should help to get you started on this year's Christmas List. If you would like more details, or to learn about the "Hot Items" for Christmas this year, check out the blog: www.ExcellentChristmasList.com

All You Need To Know About Upper Back Pain

By Parker West

Upper back pain is not a very common disorder, however, it can cause severe pain and a great amount of discomfort when it happens. The upper back or thoracic spine is different in function and form than the lower back. The neck and the lower back are meant to provide mobility whereas the upper area of the back is meant to be strong and stable so that one can stand upright. It is also required to protect the internal organs in the chest.

There are twelve vertebrae that are situated in the middle of the spine and this is what makes up the thoracic spine. Each of these vertebrae is linked to a rib on each side and these ribs are linked to the breastbone. Because of the way that the ribs are linked to the sternum in front and the spine at the rear, there is little movement in the spine.

Sudden injury or trauma can cause upper back pain. Another cause can be poor posture or strain. People who work at computers most of the day will also suffer from this complaint. This type of back pain will usually occur with shoulder or neck pain, or both.

The majority of back pain in the upper body is due to either muscular irritation or joint dysfunction, or sometimes both. Pain in the upper back is often related to strain or a sprain which could be caused by repetitive motion or even lifting heavy objects. A muscle strain stretches the muscles too much and this can result in tears in the muscle tissue. The symptoms will be similar if there is a sprain, but instead of the muscles being damaged, the ligaments in the back will be damaged.

Passive physical therapy is normally a very effective method of treatment where there is muscle strain or sprain. Massage therapy and acupuncture will also prove to be very effective. Strengthening as well as stretching exercises will also help to alleviate pain. Injecting a local anesthetic can prove effective if the area where the pain is most concentrated can be pinpointed.

A ruptured disc in the upper area of the back will also cause severe pain. A disc of cartilage which cushions and absorbs shock during movement is situated between each vertebra. The discs can harden because of usage and they may lose elasticity. If the disc starts protruding from the spinal column, it will rupture. As soon as pressure from the disc is placed on the nerves and tissues in the spine, there will be pain.

Osteoporosis can be another cause of back pain. Fibromyalgia causes muscle aches as well as stiffness, so this condition can cause inflammation of the back's connective tissue which will result in pain. Another cause of pain could be spinal stenosis which can result in nerve and tissue pinching in the spinal column. This condition is usually more prominent in people over the age of fifty.

There are many other causes of upper back pain. If you suffer from this regularly, you should visit your health-care professional before it develops into a more serious condition.

Suggested Christmas Presents For Dad

By Ken Johnson

The most challenging person on your list is often your father. Every year, many people are faced with the difficult task of selecting Christmas presents for dad. Fathers often provide little help when they are asked for gift ideas. However, a basic knowledge of his personal tastes and likes, combined with a little imagination, can allow you to choose a gift he will love.

Is your Dad a chocolate fiend? Consider buying him a box of gourmet chocolates. There are numerous companies that produce high quality candies. You can also find some more unusual offerings, such as strawberries or raspberries dipped in chocolate. Custom candy shops can provide you with his name or symbol of his favorite sport in chocolate.

Perhaps he is less than fond of yard work. You might give him a gift certificate for a season of lawn care provided by a professional service. Whether you just include the basic mowing and edging or add in fertilizing and weed killing, it's a gift he can enjoy for months.

Hobbyists can always use supplies. If your father enjoys leather work, model making, or wood carving, he might appreciate a gift card from a local hobby shop. Some hobbies demand special tools, and there might be some he would like but hesitates to buy due to cost. If you are aware of such tools, you might consider giving him one or more.

If your father ever has back pain, he might like a pillow or chair to help ease stiffness and soreness. Some styles vibrate, others generate warmth, and some will provide both features. There are styles designed for the lumbar region and others for the neck, while larger ones can accommodate the entire back.

Dad may have an idol, such as a sports figure or an actress from the "golden age' of Hollywood. You may be able to find memorabilia connected to his idol. Signed photographs, jerseys, and posters can often be found online. Other collectible items he might like are old swords, nautical items, or those related to the early days of the space program.

Your father might enjoy just spending some time with you. A day trip or weekend excursion might be the best Christmas present you could give him. You could go to a sporting event or a special museum. Almost every state has some type of sports hall of fame or a museum of natural history with dinosaur exhibits. If he was in the service, he might enjoy a military museum. Think about his interests and then research possible trips. You may end up giving yourself a gift as well.

Don't Forget the Beach Toys!

By Annie Shelton

Don't Forget the Beach Toys! - Announcing a day at the beach to my kids is always followed by a mad dash to find beach wear and gear. The beach bag with our toys has a designated spot in the garage and it's loaded first by my teenager. This is the same child who is never the first, always the last in the SUV no matter the occasion. He may be the last to buckle his seat belt, but he always assures that there will be beach toys and water toys for everyone. When you announce to your kids that you are going to spend the day at the beach, more often than not, the first thing that comes to mind for your child will not be the sound of the water or the feel of the sand, but how many sand castles he can create. It is equally important to older kids and adults that we have our favorites ready to go at a moment's notice. The movement of sand and water with our tools, a Frisbee to toss or ball to swat are absolute essentials for the trip no matter how long we plan to stay. When checking the trunk or SUV, be sure you've included these with the beach towels and beach chairs.

* There are different types and models of bucket and shovels available in toy shops or even in the convenience stores near the beaches. During the off-season, your favorite online beach supply will have a variety of colors as well. There are shovels that are made from plastics with either a short or longer handles made of plastic or wood. There are shovels too made from metal which cuts through wet sand easily, be careful giving these to very young toddlers. Sturdy plastic will last for many seasons with just a quick rinse after your day in the sand. As for the buckets, there are plastic buckets with strong sturdy handles which can hold scoops of sands that are usually heavy when wet. You can opt for plastic rake too as this is quiet safer than a shovel since it can hurl less wads of sand! Shovels and rakes with sturdy rubber handles provide better grasps for your artist child at work with the sand. Older children may pay attention to the designs a shovel or rake make in the sand as a deciding factor. Depending on the level of creativity, a shovel and rake combo may be necessary for the job.

* Sand molds are also readily available in the beach toy section. These are particularly attractive to the budding sand castle architect. Included in a sand mold set should be several sizes and shapes of molds which stow in a bucket that doubles as a larger mold. Small shovels and sturdy scoops complete the package. What usually matters most for kids is what design to choose for their sand castle or how to totally cover the adults with sand.

* Water toys, squirt guns, floaties and inflatables - A trip to the beach would not be complete without water. What better way to celebrate the trip than with a water pistol, Super Soaker and a flotation device! All shapes and sizes are available in both these toy. Specifically for the flotation device an air pump is a must, either the manual type or the electric that plugs into a car lighter. Check these devices out for an extra feature which allows DEFLATING as well. This is especially helpful for easy storage of the flotation devices after returning home. This can be a perfect time to bond with your favorite young (or old) person and sharing with them many buckets of laughter and great fun-filled moments will have you both looking forward to the next weekend at the beach!

What To Expect When Going To Pattaya Flower Gardens

By Grace Faby

In 1954 Mr and Mrs Nong Nooch bought the property in Pattaya, initially the thought was to use this as farm land however they were inspired by a foreign trip and made a decision to transform the area into tropical flower gardens. Formerly designed for preservation of tropical vegetation species the gardens were later transforms into a recreational and tourist destination. The word Suan indicates garden, therefore the name converted into English will mean Nong Nooch (family) gardens. The garden is currently managed by their son Mr. Kampon Tansacha.

The Nong Nooch Pattaya flower garden has become a favorite tourist destination and the lovely garden is now used as a location to sponsor a number of different activities. These activities vary from flower shows, florist exhibitions, botanical research, preservation, education and for the promotion of tourism in Pattaya. The most distinctive use of the Pattaya Flower gardens is for the Thai Cultural Show which is an annual event in Pattaya.

Every single day the flower gardens get over 2000 visitors, a number of these visitors come from other locations in Thailand however, many travel from other areas of Asia and all over the globe to see these lovely gardens. The flower gardens are maintained in immaculate form and they are consistently being enhanced with completely new flowers being included every day.

The Thai cultural show and dances happen every single day, they commonly begin with The Elephant Show in which Elephants are put through humiliation by being meant to play football, ride motorbikes and dancing. This is one of the more controversial parts of the flower show and they're thinking about stopping these performances. To Thai folks Elephants are respected and have an almost holy status, however to people from other countries and animal rights activists this use of Elephants is oftentimes considered undesirable.

There are several cultural performances daily such as dancing, and theatrical displays of Thai history and culture.

Nong Nuch Flower gardens in Pattaya are situated on the old Sukhumvit Road, which is the joining road between Bangkok and Pattaya. The best way from downtown Pattaya to the flower gardens is by Cab. Local flower garden trips can be arranged from travel agencies in Pattaya. Shop around for the ideal prices simply because they can vary a lot.

Italy Is The Place To Be!

By Antonio Cremenesi

Yes, I have seen a lot of the great country of Italy in Europe. Being of Italian descent, I just have to visit the country at least twice a year. I just love to go to Rome and watch ancient history mixed with modern times. But I also like cities like Milano, Modena and the Como Lake area in the north. The country has so much to offer. And then I haven't mentioned great areas like Tuscany and cities like Venice.

I have seen Italy from North to South and from East to West. I tasted the Italian cuisine with all the papillas in my mouth and I simply can't get enough of it. Why would I? Whether it is pizza, tortellini or some great seafood cooked at the southern islands, it always satisfies my appetite.

Rome and its history is something I never forget. The city breaths history 24 hours a day. It doesn't really matter what part of the city you visit, you just can't get enough of places like the Coliseum and the cathedrals.

And what to think about Venice? I mean, don't you love this place! Well, I do at least. I just have to jump into one of those typical gondolas and get a taste of history every time I am there. Unfortunately the city council wants to charge every tourist for entering the city, starting in 2011, so you better visit the city asap if you want to enjoy it for free.

Pisa, in the Tuscany region is of course famous for its tower. And yes, it is an experience to watch the tower and its strange angle. The city is always packed with tourists who climb the tower and yes, it takes quite some energy to climb it because of the strange stairs inside. But once you are at the top of the tower, you have a great few and all is forgotten.

When you leave the country and travel back home, don't forget to take some of Italy's best export products: salami and cheese. I never forget to visit one of the local farmers in the country side who make their own salami and I can guarantee you, it tastes fabulous and is nothing like the stuff you buy in your local supermarket. In other words, Italy is a great country to visit.

Hoquiam Farmers Market - Grays Harbor Farmers Market and Craft Fair

By Derek Snyder

Hoquiam and the Grays Harbor have always been good consumers of the local produce of the farmers and fisher folk of the area, and this has always been a good relationship since agriculture and commerce work side by side to sustain both. The Grays Harbor and Hoquiam town have for many generations and seasons been good sources of income for the farmers, fishermen and craftsmen who have come to supply the needs of hundreds and sometimes thousands of seasonal residents of Hoquiam and the surrounding communities who work for the millers and logging companies.

The first settlers of the land were Indian tribes that hunted and fished for their survival and the Grays Harbor forest and the rivers and coast that bordered or came through the land gave these early peoples a plentiful source of food and other items like skins and furs for clothing and bone and sinew for their various tools. The city of Hoquiam its name rather is an Indian term which meant "hungry for wood" and those who came to Grays Harbor after the brave tribes were indeed also worthy of the descriptive name.

The forest an old growth one supplied good wood and a multitude of people descended on the lumber treasure either as investors, workers or entrepreneurs seeking their fortunes from the ancient trees that dotted clustered and dotted the forest and harvest lumber they did, day in day out, working like there was no tomorrow finding little time to tend to their basic needs like the olden times, there was money to be made to provide for those needs through lumber.

As time went by in Hoquiam and Grays Harbor a lot of people came in as contract workers for the big or medium sized lumber corporations and mills and that meant they lived in logging camps that needed everything brought to them, such as food, clothing, personal products and other stuff that a lumberjack or a miller might need or not to drive them and sustain them throughout their quest for more wood.

Fish were far more bountiful before with fresh catch coming over from the coast and the fresh water species like trout and salmon come in from the various river systems all around the Olympic Peninsula, and most of not all those fish were caught by the lumber workers themselves if they can afford the time.

Now fish can still be had, especially if they are in season you will surely find a great whole fresh fish or a sumptuous fillet ready to be poached or fried in any of the fish stalls in the Grays Harbor Market and if you are already hungry and cannot wait to cook your own salmon or trout then surely there will be a small stall selling well cooked and delicious fish dishes to tickle your taste buds.

The law of supply and demand dictated the rest with the seasonal arrival of workers and lumber men and the requirements of the residents of Hoquiam and Aberdeen farmers, fisher folk and craftsmen, salesmen and entrepreneurs trooped to Hoquiam and the Grays Harbor area to get the workers to part with their hard earned dollars and it was a good venture, with most of the men and women working directly or indirectly for the lumber companies and mills needing an endless supply of things to eat, drink and use.

Grays Harbor Farmers Market and Craft Fair is one of only two Washington State farmers markets open all-year round. And you will find excellent local produce, delicious freshly baked pastries, very fresh seafood, fine chowder, even fine arts, & quality crafted items at affordable prices or even trade. Visit and partake of what the Grays Harbor Farmers Market and Craft Fair has to offer, discover new things, make new friends and taste the best of Grays Harbor and Hoquiam itself or better yet, try to bring your business to Hoquiam and be part of the good story yourself.

Thailand - The Land Of Smiles

By Owen Jones

Thailand is the most well-liked tourist destination in South-East Asia and has been for decades. This is because the climate varies throughout the year from hot to cool and even cold, if you would like to look for it; Thai food is world-renowned; the range of wildlife is broad as is the flora; the diving is fantastic and the people are friendly and hospitable. Thailand is not known as the Land of Smiles for nothing.

There are also a lot of festivals, some of which are religious, which equals Buddhist, and others are not. Thailand has been Buddhist ever since the country came into being in the Thirteen Century, but the people were Buddhist long before that. Or at least the majority of them were. There were also throw-backs to older religions just as in the West.

In the West Christmas and Easter were moved to conceal pagan festivals, but in Thailand they merely have the old festivals too. One of the biggest festivals is Loy Krathong in November (the first full moon in the twelfth lunar month). Loy Krathong is a charming festival to placate the goddess or water, Ganga, for using and abusing (polluting) her.

Nowadays, people still remember the old meaning of Loy Krathong ('Floating Boats'), but it has been taken adopted by lovers too. People float symbolic boats out onto the water and ask the goddess to pardon them and to grant a wish. Lovers push their boats out together and many believe that if the boats, krathong, float out side-by-side then they will have a trouble-free year together.

Many women put on traditional Thai costumes for the evening, especially if they are going out for a meal or to a party. Some men do as well, but not so many.

Also in November is the world-famed Elephant roundup in Surin. The elephant roundup is also popular with foreigners and Thais alike. The city of Surin is full on this weekend so if you would like to go it is worth booking your hotel with your travel ticket otherwise you may be stranded. Not that it is cold or likely to rain.

Bridge Over the River Kwae week is in November. The bridge is a moving reminder of the horror that prisoners of war from all around the world experienced at the hands of the Japanese overlords at the time. More Thais died than foreigners although Thailand was thought of as 'friendly' by the occupying Japanese.

In December it is the King's birthday and Fathers' Day on the 5th. The king is very extremely well thought of in Thailand and many people will light candles in their garden on the roadside to the king in the early evening. This is a very pretty sight, particularly in the villages where street lighting is normally minimal. Constitution Day is on the 10th and is a bank holiday, which normally means a celebration.

Christmas is celebrated in the cities by tourists, ex-pats and young Thais although it has no real religious significance outside the Christian churches in the larger cities.

New Year's Day is huge. There are parties that will last all night, dancing, feasting and fireworks.

Thailand is a wonderful place to come to in November and December and although it is thought of as high season, I am sure that you will find it cheaper to come on holiday to Thailand - The Land of Smiles - than it is to stay at home in the cold.

Christmas Ornaments in Christmas Styles

By Jeff Markerson

If you want to do something a bit different for Christmas this year, you may be thinking of new ways to display the same old Christmas decorations that you have been using for years. Instead of getting those things out, leave them in the closet and come up with some new ideas. December is a great time of year to find things to decorate with, whether those things are related to the holidays or not. Christmas ornaments are not just for your tree, as they can be versatile objects to make your own decorations for the holidays and even for the rest of the year.

You will find that there are several types of children's ornaments on the market today. You can choose from collectible ornaments, fun ornaments, or ornaments that represent your children's favorite toy or game. You can even have each ornament engraved with your child's name and the year that they received the piece. This way your items can be kept for years and you will always remember the special year that the item was bought or made.

The first thing you will want to do is get all of your items set before starting any decorating. The one thing you do not want to happen is to start decorating, only to find that you have to reach and grab for something else in the middle of it. Check your glitter glue to see that it is uncapped and open and ready to go. Find a work area that provides for a soft surface in case you accidentally drop one of the ornaments. Many of these ornaments crack very easily which is why you will need to be as careful as possible.

You can also buy some large glass vases with wide tops to fill with Christmas ornaments. This is a nice centerpiece that you can do for Christmas, or you can do it for the rest of the year in various areas of your home. You can choose to get different Christmas ornaments in various sizes and colors. You can get some with a matte finish and some that shine. Mix them up for a great decorative look. You can also put some shiny tinsel in with the ornaments or anything else you can think of that could fill in some of the spaces between the ornaments. You can also leave them as is if you like the way that they look.

If you put your mind to it, you can find many different ideas for using Christmas ornaments to decorate your home for the holidays. You can use them anywhere as long as you make sure you secure them if you have children or pets. Some are made of glass, which means shards of glass on your floor or in your carpet of they fall down. You can find great looking ornaments these days that are made with plastic that look just as good as glass, so get those if you feel that breakage could be a problem.

It is time yet once more to begin the lengthy process of decorating the house and holiday lights are invariably part of the process. The latter is usually regarded as some sort of a tedious chore by most people and they tend to want to put off doing it as long as possible. However, if given enough thought and preparation, it does not have to be so difficult. Try reading on for some few tips and guidelines to remember.

When it comes to stapling the lights, a wire tack is best used in quick order. Regular wire staplers can damage the wiring and this can be a cause for shorting out. Using wire tacks help maintain the wirings in good condition and are easier to use in getting an organized and very tidy setup.

For lights that require roof attachment, you can make an allowance of a few feet around the house for better results. It will make the arrangement a whole lot neater as well as giving an organized overall look. Otherwise, the whole setup could end up looking very messy and scattered.

Worried about wall damage? Then non-invasive clips may be a good option for you. Besides leaving no telltale marks on the surface, there is no problem using them anywhere. Use them to attach the lights to places like the roof shingles, the rain gutters on the roof, or anywhere else. Take note that each bulb should be attached with its own individual clip.

One other matter to take note of is to avoid installing outdoor lights pointing up. This increases the likelihood of water to seep inside the light bulb and cause shorting out. Make it a point to keep the lights pointing downwards or pointing outward at all times.Use electrical tape as much as possible, especially with securing the wire connections. It protects the ends from getting wet and keeps the connections from being exposed. This way, the lights will stay working far longer and stay dry as well.

For purposes of hanging lights on trees or their branches, it is recommended to use a hooked pole. It is also possible to wound the lights around the tree trunk as another style. All that is needed is to wound the strands into a ball. Next is to wrap the lights around the trunk accordingly while allowing for some spacing in between.

In general, if a ladder has to be used in order to install the lights, then here's an important word of advice DON'T. If installing the decorations has the potential to cause serious injury then it would be better not to proceed at all. Since using a ladder entails a risk of falling it makes even more sense not to even try. No decoration installation is worth the hassle of getting injured even if its only a slight possibility.

These are just a few guidelines you can consider and there are still plenty of alternatives to choose from. On second thought, you can always just pay for the services of a professional to do the holiday lights instead. It will certainly be safer and you can look forward to a nicely decorated home for your trouble. So feel free to sit back and relax.

HOQUIAM'S BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL - Music of the working class

By Dan Martinez

Some say that then kind of music a man listens to define his heart and soul, and that's true in Hoquiam City, Washington where residents celebrate and bring to life the Annual Grays Harbor Bluegrass Festival. Bluegrass is raw music guided by whatever good and values a man stands for its celebrating life and the divine, the hard labor and sweet respite that every moment brings to a working man a concept well understood in this area by its people. So, once a year bluegrass bands from local amateurs to celebrities and professionals join banjo to banjo to entertain young and old alike inside the grand Olympic Stadium.

The Grays Harbor Annual Bluegrass festival is attended by people from all walks of life, they come to Hoquiam city to partake of good music, good food, and good friends. Bluegrass music has always been welcome in Hoquiam, Washington and the Grays Harbor area, its long history of working class and their daily struggles to keep alive through hard work and doggedness, logging the surrounding forest long before the genre existed in its present form maybe explains the people's natural connection to this type of music.

During the festival you will be amazed as to the different pace and rhythm that each bluegrass band churns out their music, some fast and catchy with a nip of country genre but still not to be mistaken as such and other tunes being melancholic and heartfelt that the audience would feel like praying to the divine. This crescendo of notes is climaxed by the showdown between two of the bands members who alternately play tunes that are spontaneously dished out in an effort to wow the crowd and inspire or rather challenge the other guy to do better and this is all played out with two entirely different instruments, such as a mandolin going against an acoustic guitar or a banjo. Can you picture the excitement running through the audience at that point?

Original Bluegrass is by and large formed around a small set of acoustic stringed instruments like the mandolin, acoustic guitar, fiddle, banjo, resonator guitar and upright bass sometimes with a singer and some just pure soul reaching instrumentals, fueling spectators to move and sway to beautiful music. It is going to be an eventful week in Hoquiam when the bluegrass bands come a playing!

In the Hoquiam Bluegrass festival you will learn that this genre is notably quite different from traditional or mainstream country music, bluegrass musicians rely heavily on acoustic stringed instruments. In Bluegrass the gist of the performance is the instrumental solos that are played ad lib style and is creatively very challenging to the performer and very much enjoyed by people who get to feel the rawness of emotion brought out by the music, flowing out of the instruments may it be a fiddle or acoustic guitar.

Visitors to the Grays Harbor Bluegrass festival are encouraged by the city and its residents to go around and mingle in good fun and enjoyment, with most visitors being very familiar with the city and already having acquaintances or established friends from previous visits to Hoquiam and the Grays Harbor area.

Aside from the well loved and much focused on traditional bluegrass music genre, other bands tend to be progressive in their use of other musical instruments to enrich their own style of bluegrass with some bordering their music play with instruments more commonly identified with mainstream country music, these type or form of progressive bluegrass is often referred to by avid bluegrass scholars and traditional fans as "Newgrass".

Being part of the Annual Grays Harbor Bluegrass festival is an experience not worth missing. People from all around go to Hoquiam city and experience live music, good food and good hospitality from the people of Hoquiam who love and know their bluegrass music.
