Vacation In Nelson Bay

By Isaac Collins

Nelson bay is the ideal place to kick back and relax surrounded by nature both bush and sea. Situated about 1 1/2 hrs North of Sydney positioned in the Heart of Port Stephens it is easy to get to and an easy drive.

When in Nelsons Bay or on the headlands of Anna Bay you can always find an abundance of sea life including dolphins, fairy penguins, sea turtles and whales in the right season going right by the door. Many day trips leave the Nelson Bay marina for whale and dolphin watching fishing and scuba diving. There are some great spots to dive in the Port Stephens area.

There are many dive shops catering for the locals and visitors. Just on the tip of The Bay you'll find fly point, a favourite for scuba divers and snorkelers, while I was there I seen a sea turtle and two dolphins put there heads up amazing. This was right on dusk and the sunset was breathtaking over the hills. Another great place for diving is the looking glass which is a cavern along the islands centre filled with amazing marine life.

Whales on their annual migration are swimming past the bay between July and November. What a great site to see these magnificent mammals frolic and play with their new born. There are plenty of charter boats going out on regular tours daily to see theses creatures up close. Frank runs the Imagine Cruiser and has for many years, I have found Frank to be one of the best operators in the Bay.

Nelson Bay has a multitude of Dolphins living in the Bay. On any cruise around the bay you are sure to see some. If you go out to Anna Bay about ten minutes drive from Nelsons Bay, around sunset you may be lucky and seethe dolphins feeding in their natural habitat. amazing thing to witness.

I recently went out to the sand dunes at Birubi beach and sat in the dunes and enjoyed a bottle of Champagne while watching the sun go down. Amazing place to experience the solitude and the vastness. I became to understand how easy it would be to get lost in the desert. Many tour operators have licences to take people on tours throughout the dunes and down the beach. The beach is about 20 k's long.

The Port Stephens area has an abundance in wild life also with koalas, wallabies and kangaroos as a beginning.

Accommodation can be easily found in seaside inns, hotels, bed and breakfasts and farm stays dotting the landscape.
